Medical Update for Kim (Day after surgery) February 6th

We want to share an update on Kim as she moves through an intense phase of healing from yesterday’s surgery. Right now, the focus is on managing her pain and allowing her body the rest it needs to recover.

As we mentioned, the surgery went well in many ways and unfolded as the doctors had hoped in some respects. They were able to clear many of the troublesome areas located in her neck and base of skull. However, once they began, they discovered that this first part of the procedure was far more complicated than they had anticipated. Because of this, they weren’t able to accomplish everything they had initially planned so as not to overwhelm Kim’s body. While we knew she would need a second surgery, this may now mean even more procedures to address what couldn’t be done yesterday.
That said, there is some good news—Kim is able to talk! This was a major concern going into surgery, as there was a possibility she could temporarily lose her ability to speak. While we are incredibly relieved, we also understand that this may be due to the fact that they were unable to clear certain areas of veins higher up within her brain, as intended.
We are deeply grateful for all that was accomplished, and wow—what a journey Kim has been through. She is strong, resilient, and continuing to fight.
✨Please continue to support Kim and Fam with financial donations and in other ways you can offer as she heals. ✨
✅We also ask that you refrain from calling or texting her directly—right now, she needs rest and time to focus on pain management.
➡️For a full breakdown of yesterday’s surgery and what was completed, please check the Blog or the GoFundMe page. https://linktr.ee/giffordfamilyhope?utm_source=linktree_profile_share<sid=da11734f-9ea9-4da8-9702-4f4ccf8cdc93

Thank you all for your love, prayers, and generosity. We’ll continue to keep you updated. ❤️

Surgery Update

6/20 – Kim’s Surgery Update Kim underwent her first major surgery in Hawaii on Friday. The surgical team focused exclusively on restoring proper function to her right internal jugular vein (IJV) . Here’s what the procedure involved: Resection of the first cervical vertebra (C1): This bone, along with an elongated styloid process and associated ligament (a condition known as Eagle’s Syndrome ), was compressing the vein, preventing blood from draining properly from Kim’s brain. Removal of scar tissue: The vein was also constricted by unusual scar tissue, further reducing blood flow. More details about this scar tissue are shared below. Following the surgery, initial assessments suggested improved blood flow through the vein. However, subsequent imaging revealed that the vein remains partially collapsed at the C1 level . As a result, Kim may require a second surgery this coming week to place a stent and fully open the vein. Understandably, this news is deeply disappointing and emotiona...

Update from Kim’s Healing Journey

It’s been about two weeks since Kim returned home from Hawaii, and right now the focus is simple but vital: monitor,  rest and recovery . The medical team has made it clear that this is top priority. Kim’s body has been through a lot—her system responds intensely to procedures, and this has added layers of complexity that doctors are working to better control. Further testing is scheduled for late August to evaluate her brain, vascular compressions, and jugular veins. The medical team is specifically monitoring Kim’s right jugular vein, which collapsed post surgically, to see if rest, time and reduced swelling will allow it to re-open. These results will help guide decisions about what comes next and when. It’s not the update Kim hoped for. She had been holding onto the hope that this chapter might finally be closing—but for now, it’s a “wait and heal” season. We continue to cheer her on and hold the vision of her receiving the very best care at every turn. 💜 #LymeDisease #HAE #He...
